What is emotional intelligence (EI)?

Emotional intelligence (otherwise known as emotional quotient or EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.


How Does Emotional Intelligence Work?


•Strong emotional intelligence increases one’s ability to make sound

decisions, build and sustain collaborative relationships, deal effectively with stress, and cope to a greater degree with constant change.

•Balanced state of mind enables an individual not only to perform well in the workplace, but also in accomplishing various other goals and objectives in his or her life.

• According to Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist who helped to

popularize emotional intelligence, there are five key elements to it:


  • Self-awareness.

  • Self-regulation.

  • Motivation.

  • Empathy.

  • Social skills.
